Linear park 1

Friends of Linear Park

Where once there were houses there is now a meadow to be enjoyed by all.

Linear Park was built in the 1990s on Grove Green Road when houses were demolished to make way for the A12. It was redesigned in 2019 as part of Making Places, a Waltham Forest Council scheme to revive run down areas across the borough.

Plot Lines traces the pattern of previous houses along the more than half a kilometer of park in strips of lavender, with historic stories inscribed on plaques amongst meadow grasses and flowers.

This project is a collaboration between Matter Architecture and the artist Lucy Harrison, building on our knowledge of the borough and experience of working with communities to explore social history.

Matter Architecture and artist Lucy Harrison opened up the park, planted lavender along the boundary lines of houses that were formerly on the site, with wild flowers and community growing areas in between, funded by additional funding from the Mayor of London’s Greener City scheme. Plaques with stories of former residents are installed on plinths along the park and raised beds allow for easier planting. During the summer the park is a riot of wild flowers, bees and butterflies.

A small group of local residents who came together during the Making Places project meet at irregular intervals to weed, tidy up, and plant seeds and bulbs. We would like to have more people join us to grow the group, develop what we can do in different areas of the park and hopefully engage more local residents.

If you would like to join us or to hear more please email to be added to the mailing list.

This park is open all year round and free to view.
